Telstra launches outbound voice calling on Google Nest devices, iPhone eSIM support

Telstra says it is the first mobile carrier in the world to support voice-activated outbound calls on Google Nest and Home devices.

The telco said that its mobile customers could link up to six mobile services to a compatible Google Assistant device and synchronise contacts. A Google Mini, Home, Home Max or Hub can be used to dial by contact or business name, or call a particular number.

Google Assistant can be trained to recognise up to six individuals’ voices using its Voice Match feature.

Telstra will begin to roll out the service to customers from today.

“Voice technology is growing rapidly in Australia with smart speakers in over 1.35M Australian households, and two-thirds of Australian owners admitting to using their smart speaker daily,” said Telstra connected devices and accessories principal, Steve Dance.

New Telstra service facilitates secure B2B data sharing

A new service built by Telstra in partnership with Microsoft allows enterprises to share access to their data with business partners via a secure, permission-based platform.

Telstra is initially focusing on the logistics, water and agricultural sectors for its Data Hub offering. The telco’s group executive, product and technology, Christian von Reventlow, said that 99 per cent of businesses’ data was “simply unused.”

“Tonnes and tonnes of insights are left on the table and don’t get leveraged,” he told a press briefing at Telstra Vantage. In logistics alone, “billions of dollars” of value in Australia could be unlocked through better use of data; globally, the opportunity is in the trillions, he said.

Telstra had the opportunity to “do something in Australia and then scale it globally,” acting as a facilitator for data exchange.

The Telstra Data Hub product owner, Julian Butler, said that the telco had spoken to more than 500 customers over the last two years about their challenges with sharing transactional data with business partners.

Telstra’s IoT growth accelerating, exec says

As of the end of July there were more than 3.2 million Internet of Things devices connected to Telstra’s network according to Gerhard Loots, the telco’s global IoT solutions executive.

“Our first million devices took eight years; our second million devices took five years,” Loots told a press briefing at the Telstra Vantage conference. Telstra had managed to grow that number to 3 million devices in two years, he added. “I reckon we’ll do a million devices this year,” the Telstra executive said.

“Australia is starting to embrace IoT,” Loots said, citing the acceleration in devices connected to Telstra’s network. “Five years ago if we look back at this space it was pretty dead; a lot of it was power points and so forth.”

In FY19, Telstra’s IoT revenue grew by 20 per cent. Loots said Telstra had completed the rollout of two IoT networks: NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) and Cat M1.

Last year, Telstra detailed new location tracking services for consumers, SMBs and enterprises. One of the customer case studies featured at Telstra Vantage was SCT Logistics, which is using  telco’s Track and Monitor system. SCT is monitoring 1500 trailers, containers and rail wagons with Telstra’s help, Loots said.

The logistics company has been able to reduce trailer loss, as well as improve supply chain visibility, thanks in part to fitting assets with a solar-powered Telstra tracker.

Telstra CEO expresses ‘surprise’ at NBN Co moving on enterprise market

NBN Co seeking to grow its share of the enterprise networking market is a “little bit of a surprise” for Telstra, the telco’s CEO Andy Penn says.

Addressing media during a briefing at the telco’s enterprise conference, Telstra Vantage, Penn said that it was particularly surprising because the rollout of the NBN was “slowing down” as it enters its final stages while NBN Co was simultaneously “diverting capital into building more fibre in CBDs”.

“Effectively what it means at a practical level is capital is being diverted from rolling out the core purpose of the NBN to this, so that’s a surprise,” Penn said.

“I had understood the purpose of the NBN was to provide broadband connectivity to every household in Australia not to build fibre for enterprise customers,” the CEO said, adding that “lots of telcos” already have fibre throughout CBDs.

NBN Co has indicated it intends to eventually grow its revenue from businesses to $1 billion a year. Last month it revealed that its FY19 revenue from the business segment had grown 54 per cent year-on-year.

Telstra consolidates IT services business as ‘Telstra Purple’

Telstra Enterprise has consolidated its professional and technical services businesses, largely built through a string of acquisitions, into a single brand dubbed ‘Telstra Purple’.

The telco said that Telstra Purple comprises more than 1500 people, who between them work on more than 8000 projects a year. Telstra Purple is Australia’s largest technology services business, the company claimed.

Telstra Purple brings together VMTech, MSC, Readify, Kloud, Bridgepoint, O2,
NSC, iVision, and the UK’s Company85, and will offer services in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK.

The announcement was made at the telco’s enterprise conference, Telstra Vantage.

“It’s something that our customers have been asking for for a while,” said Michael Ebeid, the head of Telstra Enterprise.

Telstra to roll out underground private 4G network for South32 mine

Telstra has begun work on a network that it says will be one of the world’s largest underground LTE rollouts.

The telco said it was developing a private 4G network for South32’s Cannington mine in North West
Queensland.
The network will initially stretch 6.5 kilometres, but can be potentially extended as needed. The deployment is based on so-called ‘leaky feeder’ coaxial cabling and uses equipment provided by METStech and Ericcson.

“Telstra will deploy the underground network using a private, virtualised core and LTE radio
technologies distributed over leaky feeder cable using LTE-capable bi-directional amplifiers,” said Jeannette McGill, head of Telstra Mining Services.

“Our analysis indicates this to be the most effective solution for underground miners, and is upgradeable to 5G.”

South32 Cannington will have its own equipment, SIM cards and unique network codes, according to McGill.
“Telstra’s installation will enable access to the latest advances in 4G LTE and NB-IoT,” McGill said. “Our goal is to establish an effective network that will assist South32 Cannington in driving safety, productivity and efficiency initiatives.”

In June Telstra said that had installed a private LTE mobile network at Newcrest’s Lihir goldmine in Papua New Guinea — the first private 4G network to be rolled out in PNG.

Telstra Mining Services launched in mid-2016, building on the acquisition of network design and consulting services business of CBO Telecommunications.

Telstra prepares to use low-band spectrum for 5G coverage boost

Telstra chief executive Andy Penn has told a shareholder meeting that the telco plans to make use of some of its lower band spectrum holdings over the “next 12 months or so” to help boost its 5G services.

5G services are anticipated to eventually be delivered over mid-band, low-band and high-band frequencies.

Australia’s initial 5G services are based on 3.5GHz spectrum, which was auctioned off last year. Both Optus and Telstra earlier this year launched 5G services using the band.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has indicated it intends to auction so-called “millimetre wave” (or mmWave) spectrum towards the end of 2020, Penn noted today.

The ACMA is currently proposing a hybrid-use licensing model for the 26GHz band, which is expected to be the first mmWave spectrum telcos will get their hands on; Telstra and Optus also won’t the regulator to leave the door open to 5G services in the 28GHz band.

Telstra cops $400m revenue hit from NBN Co connection delays – Finance – Telco/ISP

Telstra has come good on analyst sentiment that NBN Co’s latest corporate plan issued on Friday will buffet its market guidance, telling the ASX on Monday opening that its overall revenue and cash flow will take a hit because of slower than anticipated rollout.

The telco has shaved back its predicted total income by around $400 million, booking in its new range at between $25.3 billion to $27.3 billion for FY20, down from $25.7 billion to $27.7 billion.

“Telstra no longer anticipates FY20 being the year of peak nbn headwind and now estimates this will occur in FY21. The changes to forecast activations in NBN Co’s Corporate Plan 2020 also has the effect of deferring Per Subscriber Address Amount (PSAA) receipts from NBN Co in FY20 into future periods.”

However the delay in the rollout has a silver lining for the local telco giant because it effectively defers some of the hit it will have to take on the government mandated network, prompting Telstra to modestly up its earnings before interest tax, depreciation and amortisation by $100 million to between $7.4 billion to $7.9 million.

But it cautioned the effect was merely down to a matter of timing.

“Telstra confirms that the NBN Co Corporate Plan 2020 does not alter the view, provided to the market on 15 August 2019, that underlying EBITDA excluding in-year nbn headwind is expected to grow by up to $500 million in FY20,” Telstra said in a statement.

Ironically, delays in NBN connections broadly benefit Telstra because it gives the telco  more time to muscle-up new faster mobile services like 5G that could challenge the user experience of lower speed NBN plans offered by retail service providers, especially in metro areas.

Telstra had warned the market on Friday the changes set out in the NBN Co. corporate plan “including a reduction in the total number of premises forecast to be connected during FY20 from 2 million to 1.5 million” had potential to materially crimp its numbers.

NBN Co on Friday projected its average revenue per user (ARPU) for residential customers would be $49 by FY23, a new figure derived by it splitting revenue forecasts by business and residential users for the first time.

“We don’t intend to break out business ARPU as we do not believe it is meaningful on a per-premises basis,” CEO Stephen Rue said on Friday.

Telstra revises forecasts for third year running after changes to NBN plan

Changes made by NBN Co to the timing of the National Broadband Network mean that Telstra for the third year in a row has had to revise its financial forecasts.

NBN Co last week released an updated corporate plan that revealed changes to its activation targets for FY20.

“Given the current priority on network optimisation and the degree of civil build required for FTTC [fibre to the curb], there has been a shift in phasing during FY20 for the deployment and activations,” the updated document states. “This extended the end point for the respective 18-month migration periods for some customers beyond the previously forecast timing.” (Once an area is declared ready for service by NBN Co, households have 18 months to migrate from the copper network to the NBN.)

NBN Co cut by 500,000 to 1.5 million the number of premises it expects to be connected in FY20. The company said it expects to connect 8.1 million premises by 30 June 2021, which is around six months later than it previously expected.

“Telstra’s FY20 guidance provided to the market on 15 August 2019 was predicated on NBN Co’s previous Corporate Plan 2019 and assumed the nbn rollout and migration in FY20 would be broadly in accordance with the 2019 plan,” Telstra said in a statement released to the ASX.

Telstra sees at least 59 exchanges broken into – Telco/ISP

A spate of break-ins at Telstra exchanges across the greater Sydney metro area has now impacted at least 59 facilities, with security patrols beefed up at as many as 166 critical sites across NSW.

Telstra first revealed on July 30 that 26 exchange buildings had been broken into and vandalised.

The number was revised upwards to 44 buildings on the same day, and then again to 59 buildings by the middle of this month, according to an advisory by TPG.

“According to Telstra, all exchange sites are currently operational however some of these exchanges have suffered damage to critical electrical equipment,” TPG noted.

“The affected exchanges will be either closed, or have access restricted to all Telstra staff, contractors and [Telstra] Wholesale customers until inspections have been completed and any safety issues are resolved.”

The TPG advisory states that “due to vandalism of these sites, damage incurred includes leaving electrical equipment and wires exposed putting anyone accessing these facilities [at] risk.”

There have been unconfirmed accounts in recent weeks pointing to earthing and power cabling being targeted at the exchanges, though these could not be independently verified.

Telstra has confirmed that the “criminal damage” incident has resulted in outages to services that would take longer to repair than usual.

The last publicly-accessible information shows 5000 copper-based phone services are damaged. The impacted area stretches from Berowra in Sydney’s north to Cronulla in the south.

A Telstra spokesperson told iTnews that “all exchange sites are currently operational with majority open for normal business.”

“Where sites suffered damage to critical electrical equipment they were closed, or had access restricted, until inspections were completed and any safety issues resolved,” the spokesperson said.

“The majority of sites have been restored and restoration works will continue over coming days for the others.

“Restoration times can be impacted by the complexity of the damage, including sourcing new infrastructure and managing safety risks.

“Our team has and continues to work as quickly as they can and we have brought in additional expert resources where required.

“We understand this situation may be an inconvenience and result in some delays to fault repairs and activating new orders, but the safety of our people, contractors and customers is paramount.”

Telstra said it is continuing to work closely with NSW Police “to assist in capturing the offenders” responsible for the string of break-ins.

“We are unable to provide further information on this as it is an ongoing investigation,” the spokesperson said.

“However, the security of our exchanges is a priority and we regard attacks on our exchanges as very serious matters.”

The telco did not address questions on whether the number of exchanges hit had increased, or on the physical security it has contracted to watch sites outside of business hours in the wake of the break-in spree.
