How to backup Nutanix with Nakivo Backup and Replication

Nutanix is a mature hypervisor platform. It has wide adoption and it is quickly gaining market share. Nutanix, when it started with its vision for the next-gen hypervisor, has attracted many bright people from VMware who moved to Nutanix to execute its vision. Now, several years later, you can see the result, 14.000+ worldwide customers and that is only a beginning.

With Nutanix, you can effortlessly leverage cloud agility with ease of use, which included security and control. It is very easy to migrate from ESXi, Hyper-V and even public AWS to AHV with Nutanix Move, for free. While Nutanix has many benefits over similar solutions, you also have to make sure that you use the right solution for the backup. Nakivo Backup & Replication has added support for Nutanix. If for example you used Hyper-V and moved to Nutanix, you can still use Nakivo with Nutanix.

Backup Nutanix With Nakivo Backup and Replication

In order to backup Nutanix, we have to add Nutanix AVH cluster first. Click on Add New… button in the middle of the screen and click on Nutanix AVH cluster.

We have to enter the hostname or IP of the Nutanix cluster, Username, and Password. Unless you changed the cluster port, you can leave the default entry. For backing up Nutanix, we need to deploy Nutanix transporter. If Nutanix transporter is not yet deployed, you can do so before you add a Transporter to Nakivo Backup & Replication.

If credentials are correct, the Nutanix Cluster will be added.

In Nakivo Backup & Replication configuration, click on Transporters and Add Transporter.

Nutanix Transporter is a Nutanix AVH Appliance, which you can download from Nakivo website. Go to the Nakivo Backup and Replication download page where you can also download the trial. Click on a Nutanix AVH Virtual Appliance and click on a Transporter only. Deploy Transporter to the Nutanux AVH.

Enter the Transporter name, select Cluster, Storage container, and virtual network. In the Network section, you can configure a static address or DHCP address for IP and DNS configuration. Once you configure all the settings, click on a Deploy button.

If all the settings are correct, you will see the newly deployed Nutanix Transporter in the Transporters section.

Once we add Nutanix cluster and Nutanix transporter to the Nakivo Backup & Replication, we can create our first backup job. To create a new Nutanix AVH backup job, click on a Create -> Nutanix AVH backup job.

You will start a New Backup Job Wizzard for Nutanix AVH. Select virtual machines you would like to backup and click on the Next button.

On the Schedule tab, you can create a schedule for the job, you can select days on which the job will run and the hour at which it will run. You can also click on the Do not schedule, run on demand if you want the job to be run on a per needed basis. Click on the Next button.

On the Retention tab, you can set up retention for the job. You can choose to keep the select number of copies or you can configure Grandfather, father, son type of retention where you will also keep X number of days, X number of weeks, X number of months and X number of years the backup. I love how Nakivo kept simple idea also simple to configure. There are vendors who claim to support GFS retention effortlessly, but when you want to implement it, you discover that they opted for a very difficult implementation. Click on the Next button to proceed to the next screen.

In the last step, you can name the job, set up App-aware mode, Change tracking, enable Network acceleration and set up encryption. In addition, you can also set up Pre and Post Actions like send job reports to email recipients, run scripts before and after the job is run. You can select a transporter, limit transporter load and enable Bandwidth throttling. Once you complete configuration, you can click on a Finish or Finish & Run button.

When the job is created and started, you will see job information on the Dashboard. On the Dashboard, you will see a percentage of the running job, virtual machines that are being backed up. You will also see the speed off in the MB/s for the backup job and transferred data in GB.

How to restore a VM to the Nutanix via Nakivo Backup & Replication

To restore a VM to the Nutanix platform, a procedure is as simple as the backup. Click on the Recover and select VM recovery from backup.

Select VM that you wish to recover. Here you can also select a recovery point.

On the Destination tab, you can select Cluster, storage container and Network you wish to recover to.

On the options tab, you can name the job, enable Network acceleration and encryption. You can also choose a recovery mode and new recovery name. You can also generate a new MAC address so that the VM won’t conflict with the existing VM.  You can complete a recovery job by clicking on the Finish or Finish & Run to start the job immediately.

Once the job is complete, you will see a new VM with a new name.

Conclusion

Nutanix is quickly gaining tractions in the industry. Hyperconverged infrastructure is here and Nutanix is perfect for the job. Companies like Volkswagen, JetBlue, Leonardo, Trek, and Johannesburg Stock Exchange are proof that Nutanix does something right. When you use a great hypervisor it is only natural to use a great backup solution as well. NAKIVO Backup & Replication v9.0 released

Nakivo just released a major release, version 9 of Backup and Replication. This is a major release, and as such, it introduces a major feature along with various improvements and fixes. Before we start talking about the new version, let’s go back in time for a little bit.

Not so long ago, something like 15 years ago, Symantec Backup was still a synonym for the affordable and reliable corporate backup product. While affordable was not affordable and reliable was not reliable, there were other, more expensive and more reliable solutions. When virtualization technology was introduced, old school vendors were very slow to introduce virtual backup solutions. Even when they released support for virtualization products, they released agents which relied on old technology which made virtual backup slow. The main reason that virtual backup was slow lies in the way agents did a backup. Essentially they used the same technology for backup as they did for backup of physical servers. Backup was slow, and while the backup was running, hosts got very slow as well affecting the performance of every virtual machine. At that time, some companies realized that virtual backup has potential, so they created a virtual-only backup. They created backup products that did one thing well, and that was backup of virtual infrastructure. When Symantec tried to follow, they had some issues with the proper solution; their solution was full of bugs, the market noticed. At that time, migration from physical to virtual was progressing at a record pace, so Symantec and other old school vendors lost their market share. And the rest is history.

Nakivo is one of the pioneers of virtual backup solutions. As such, it was in their interest to create a perfect virtual backup product. They supported major virtualization platforms and kept adding features so that now, virtual backup is almost perfect.

Unfortunately, many companies still run physical servers in their infrastructure. And most have valid reasons for doing so. One example of why would you run a physical server is licensing. Some database vendors are known to complicate when the database is run in the virtual environment, so it may be cheaper to run their product in the physical instance. To help those clients migrate from out of date backup solutions, Nakivo crafted a new feature capable of protecting physical MS Windows servers.

Nakivo Backup and replication 9, new features

Windows Server backup

When we talk about a backup, one of the very important features is called application-aware mode. Application-aware mode ensures consistency of all applications and databases (Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, MS SQL, Sharepoint, Oracle, etc…) running on Windows Server. Nakivo performs application-aware backup on virtual and physical servers, ensuring that backup can be restored no matter the platform.

One of the improvements that went into Windows Server Backup is incremental backups, that means that only unique block of data are copied to the backup repository. That functionality helps achieve faster backup performance and more efficient storage space consumption.

Besides, Nakico Backup & Replication can save even more time. Listen for this; Windows Server Backups are performed with the Network Acceleration enabled. To further optimize the use of storage space, Nakivo Backup and Replication makes use of built-in compression and global deduplication mechanisms. To make feature-complete Nakivo Backup & Replication can automatically delete Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL logs after a successful Windows Server backup. Having these features will lower your storage requirements even further.

What about security? When you select Nakivo Backup and Replication 9 for Windows Server backup, you can be safe from unauthorized access. Windows Server backup can be encrypted in-flight and in rest, which ensures that sensitive data you have is safe during and after a backup job.

Physical to virtual P2V

Another feature that is welcome to many users is the advanced Physical to Virtual functionality (P2V). By having this feature, you can recover physical machines to VMware and Hyper-V. Having this functionality in place, you can be safe knowing that you will be able to recover business-critical parts of your infrastructure instantly.

Hyper-V 2019 Support

If your virtualization of choice is Hyper-V, then you can plan the upgrade to the latest release as Nakivo Backup & Replication 9 brings support for the newest Hyper-V release and take advantage of the latest Hyper-V features.

NAKIVO Data Protection Solution for NEC HYDRAstor

Nakivo has joined forces with NEC to create enterprise-grade data protection for VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, AWS EC2, and Windows servers. Part of that solution is NEC HYDRAstor’s deduplication technology solves the problem of ever-increasing backup storage requirements, the other part is Nakivo Backup & Replication which take care of protecting your backup. When you select that solution you can expect to decrease the size of your backup by up to 95% and ensure the decrease in the size of the backup by up to 95% all by ensuring complete data protection for your environment all while significantly lowering data protection cost.

Conclusion

With the latest release, Nakivo Backup & Replication completed a cycle, started with the virtualization only backup product. Nakivo has grown up into the complete enterprise-ready product which can protect the entire infrastructure, ranging from virtualization to physical infrastructure. Companies who have been using separate products, perhaps even the same physical products that were run over by time, can finally modernize their physical backup solution and improve backup size performance when using NEC HYDRAstor solution. You can try the latest release and see if you can replace old technology for the latest and greatest. One of the benefits I noticed with Nakivo is that the various discounts recently, so I recommend you visit their site to see what promotions are currently active.

Nakivo Backup and Replication v8.5 released

Nakivo released NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.5 comes with support for Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor among many other features. Nakivo is growing fast which can also be attributed to the new features they keep adding and unique support for many NAS vendors. This release deserves a special spot in Nakivo arsenal of successful releases. A complete list of supported hypervisors is now the following: VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Amazon AWS EC2 and Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor.

Deal Alert! Nakivo is celebrating its 25th release! Nakivo is offering a limited-time 10% discount on a 3-year Enterprise subscription license!

We covered Nakvio Backup and Replication 8.5 Beta, where we covered another great feature called VM Replication from a backup file which reduces stress on the hosts and storage array as the replication does not require additional snapshots.

Nakivo also listens to MSP – Manage Service Providers and SMBs. A lot of MSPs like SMBs uses Open Source FreeNAS for their storage. With the latest release, Nakivo has added support for FreeNAS, meaning you can install Nakivo on the FreeNAS operating system. That way you have the backup appliance as close to the storage as possible making the backup process faster and cheaper. Nakivo now supports all the major NAS vendors like Synology, QNAP, ASUSTOR and WesternDigital NAS.

New features in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.5:

Windows 2019 support: In the latest release Nakivo brings support for the latest releases, this time it can be installed on a Microsoft Windows Server 2019.

Per Machine subscription licensing: What a great idea, listen to this. Rather than being locked into a specific Hypervisor vendor, you can purchase a per-machine annual subscription for Nakivo Backup and Replication. One of the benefits of such licensing is that you increase your cost for backup as you grow. Pricing starts per $17 machine/year. You can select from MS Hyper-V, VMware vSphere or a Nutanix Acropolis. That way you can switch between hypervisors without additional cost.

Replication from Backup: If you are serious about your infrastructure protection then you are probably running backups and replicas for critical VMs. You need backups for backup archiving and replicas for quick restores in case of problems. The latest version of Nakivo Backup and Replication can create replicas from existing backups. That way the load in infrastructure is minimal.

FreeNAS support enables software-defined backup appliance: As I mentioned before, Nakivo Backup and Replication v8.5 can be installed on a FreeNAS. That means that you can create a cost-efficient backup appliance which is not limited to specific hardware. Did you get a hint? You can set up your hardware appliance for the fraction of the cost of the appliances vendors. If you are MSP you can deploy cost-efficient backup appliances to your customers. One of the benefits of such appliances is that they serve as great protection against the crypto type of malware.

Nutanix AHV Support: Nakivo Backup and Replication now supports Nutanix. Many Nutanix customers will be happy to be able to use a great backup product for their platform and perform application-aware, image-based, incremental backup across VMware, Hyper-V, Amazon EC2, and Nutanix AHV environments.

Auto-Update: Auto-update is a welcome feature as it will save you quite some time when using the product. Now when you want to update to the latest version you can do so directly from a web-based interface with just a few clicks.

Raspberry PI Ransomware Proof Mini Backup Appliance: It may sound strange for Nakivo to support Raspberry PI which you can use to create a light but a fully functional backup appliance. Did I mention that it can be configured to be ransomware-proof? Well, What is great about this is that Nakivo architecture is advanced that it is easy to support ARM architecture. If you think that ARM is only for tinkers, check out these ARM servers from Gigabyte. But if you like the idea of Ransomware Proof Mini Backup Appliance but find Raspberry PI too limiting, you can check out the Rock PI, a great alternative to the PI with support Gbit LAN, PCIe based M2 drives and USB 3 ports.

You can download a trial version and test to see how easy it is to install and use Nakivo Backup and Replication. The latest update is amazing and I already see some great uses for ARM support. In addition, Auto Update, Nutanix support, Free NAS support, Replication from Backup and latest MS Windows Server 2019 Support make v8.5 of Nakivo Backup and Replication a worthy update.

NAKIVO Backup & Replication v8.1 released – Automation on fire

Nakivo has released the latest version of their backup product Nakivo Backup and Replication. This time Nakivo Backup & Replication version 8.1 brings improvements also to the User Interface, making navigation throughout the product much easier. Items like Inventory, General, Repositories, and Transporters are now shown in a more user-friendly format. Enterprise users will appreciate that. In addition, innovation never stops with Nakivo, the latest version introduced Policy-Based Data protection, Universal Object Recovery, SSL certificate installation for increased security – not bad huh.

Nakivo Backup and Replication 8.1 features

Lets take a look at new features.

Policy-Based Data Protection

I can’t imagine IT without virtualization. In these days, almost all the servers are virtual and the ones that are not will soon become. The more servers we have, the more servers we have to manage and backup. Backing up a dozen servers is completely different than backing up hundreds of servers. In order to maintain a high quality of data protection, administrators have to keep up with all the changes that are taking place in IT. Management is making quick decisions, more data is required for better decisions and new virtual servers are being created. There must be a better way to protect existing and newly created servers.

Nakivo Backup & Replication 8.1 tackled this problem and made the job much easier for System Administrators. A solution comparable to auto-pilot that is used on Airplanes. The newly developed Policy-Based Data Protection feature will make manual data protection management go away by automating backup, replication, and backup copy jobs.

With 9 parameters currently available, you can create an automated job that will backup servers based on your conditions. For example, in the next 7 days, we will create 3 new Oracle servers, we will create 2 Linux servers with 8 CPU cores and there may be servers that can exceed 300GB in size. What we can do with our policy is almost magical. We can choose to backup all servers that have Oracle in the name. We can choose to backup all servers that have 8 CPU cores. We can choose to back up all the servers that exceed 300GB in size.

When new servers that match our rule are discovered they are included automatically in the backup scope. You can use the only condition in the policy or you can use all nine that are currently available. This is the start of something amazing.

Universal Object Recovery

Nakivo Backup and Replication has native support for many applications where, by using application recovery, you can recover individual items. If the application was not supported you had to recovery entire VM and only that you were able to recover individual items. With Universal Object Recovery, Nakivo has added support for applications that are not supported natively with Universal Object Recovery. In order to recover individual objects without full VM recovery, all you have to do is to mount disks from the backup to a VM and then use Native application management tools to recover required items. This feature will make the recovery process much faster and will, in turn, save many resources like it is normal for an Enterprise-grade solution.

SSL Certificate Installation

Until now, Nakivo Backup & Replication used a self-signed certificate for increased security. In the latest version, Nakivo went a step further and in order to increase security further added a feature where you are able to import your own SSL certificate. That way you can ensure that the connection to the Nakivo is always secure.

Conclusion

Nakivo Backup and Replication 8.1 is the latest release which follows Nakivo tired and tested release cycle. Every release brings just enough features to make users of Nakivo excited. Every release brings just the right features to make the daily job easier. At the same time, each release is tested thoroughly. The latest release brings Policy-Based Data Protection for increased protection, improved UI to make navigation easier. All things considered, this is a great release. You can download the trial edition to test new features.
