Oracle to launch Melbourne cloud region

Oracle will launch a Melbourne region for its cloud services as part of its push to add 20 new regions to its portfolio by the end of next year.

The company aims to end 2020 with a total of 36 Oracle Cloud infrastructure regions. Currently the company operates 16 Oracle Cloud regions (five of those are dedicated to government).

Oracle last month launched a new Generation 2 Cloud region in Sydney.

The company used its Oracle Openworld conference in San Francisco to detail its in-country dual region strategy, offering customers on-shore options for disaster recovery.

“Enterprise customers worldwide require geographically distributed regions for true business continuity, disaster protection and regional compliance requirements. Multiple availability domains within a region will not address this issue,” said Don Johnson, executive vice president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Logistics company sues Oracle alleging crash-prone, cumbersome software

WA-headquartered logistics group Sadleirs has sued Oracle, alleging the vendor lied about the capabilities of its transportation management platform.

The company has filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court against the software vendor, arguing that claims made about the Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) system were false or overblown and in breach of the Australian Consumer Law

Sadleirs alleges that the software was “not robust and is prone to crashing and timing out even during simple operations” and representations by Oracle that the software was efficient were also false because “the OTM system does not allow for operational efficiency”.

In 2015 the privately owned logistics company began searching for a single software system to handle logistics, warehousing and finances.

Oracle submitted a response to a Sadleirs request for information (RFI) and following negotiations a contract was signed in August 2017. The group that month also signed a contract with Oracle partner PrimeQ, which Sadleirs said was recommended by the software company.

Software giant Oracle sues blockchain startup over similar name

Software giant Oracle is suing a blockchain venture capital startup for trademark infringement and “cybersquatting,” reports Computer Reseller News.

Oracle, based in Redwood City, California, has alleged CryptoOracle LLC and its owner Louis Kerner purposefully sought to leverage Oracle‘s reputation as an “innovator and leader within the technology industry” when it selected its brand name.

Kerner, who lists himself as a former Goldman Sachs exec on LinkedIn, founded CryptoOracle in 2017. It’s an advisory firm that seeks to assist businesses and entrepreneurs in the blockchain space, and sells tickets to meet-ups and other educational events it apparently organizes.

Oracle, one of the most successful software companies in the world, is mostly famous for its database management offerings. The firm also hosts a range of other services (such as cloud computing for blockchain systems), as well as educational events and conferences.

According to Computer Reseller News, major news outlet CNBC recently interviewed Kerner and featured the CryptoOracle brand in a TV segment, which caught Oracle’s attention.

Oracle had previously tried to settle the dispute out-of-court with a cease-and-desist notice, but Kerner reportedly replied with a filled-in trademark application for the CryptoOracle brand name.

Related court documents reportedly state: “While Oracle would otherwise welcome some of defendants’ endeavors, including events aimed at fostering a community around innovative and curious blockchain-enthusiasts, Oracle cannot tolerate the use of its famous trademark to brand [the] defendants’ business.”

Oracle has requested a federal judge force CryptoOracle to withdraw the trademark application, remove its related branding from all websites, and change its name.

Ominously, the firm’s attorney reportedly claimed Oracle is entitled to take CryptoOracle’s profits, too.
