How to backup Nutanix with Nakivo Backup and Replication


Nutanix is a mature hypervisor platform. It has wide adoption and it is quickly gaining market share. Nutanix, when it started with its vision for the next-gen hypervisor, has attracted many bright people from VMware who moved to Nutanix to execute its vision. Now, several years later, you can see the result, 14.000+ worldwide customers and that is only a beginning.

With Nutanix, you can effortlessly leverage cloud agility with ease of use, which included security and control. It is very easy to migrate from ESXi, Hyper-V and even public AWS to AHV with Nutanix Move, for free. While Nutanix has many benefits over similar solutions, you also have to make sure that you use the right solution for the backup. Nakivo Backup & Replication has added support for Nutanix. If for example you used Hyper-V and moved to Nutanix, you can still use Nakivo with Nutanix.

Backup Nutanix With Nakivo Backup and Replication

In order to backup Nutanix, we have to add Nutanix AVH cluster first. Click on Add New… button in the middle of the screen and click on Nutanix AVH cluster.

We have to enter the hostname or IP of the Nutanix cluster, Username, and Password. Unless you changed the cluster port, you can leave the default entry. For backing up Nutanix, we need to deploy Nutanix transporter. If Nutanix transporter is not yet deployed, you can do so before you add a Transporter to Nakivo Backup & Replication.

If credentials are correct, the Nutanix Cluster will be added.

In Nakivo Backup & Replication configuration, click on Transporters and Add Transporter.

Nutanix Transporter is a Nutanix AVH Appliance, which you can download from Nakivo website. Go to the Nakivo Backup and Replication download page where you can also download the trial. Click on a Nutanix AVH Virtual Appliance and click on a Transporter only. Deploy Transporter to the Nutanux AVH.

Enter the Transporter name, select Cluster, Storage container, and virtual network. In the Network section, you can configure a static address or DHCP address for IP and DNS configuration. Once you configure all the settings, click on a Deploy button.

If all the settings are correct, you will see the newly deployed Nutanix Transporter in the Transporters section.

Once we add Nutanix cluster and Nutanix transporter to the Nakivo Backup & Replication, we can create our first backup job. To create a new Nutanix AVH backup job, click on a Create -> Nutanix AVH backup job.

You will start a New Backup Job Wizzard for Nutanix AVH. Select virtual machines you would like to backup and click on the Next button.

Select onboard Backup Repository, select VM disks and Backup repository. Click on the Next button.

On the Schedule tab, you can create a schedule for the job, you can select days on which the job will run and the hour at which it will run. You can also click on the Do not schedule, run on demand if you want the job to be run on a per needed basis. Click on the Next button.

On the Retention tab, you can set up retention for the job. You can choose to keep the select number of copies or you can configure Grandfather, father, son type of retention where you will also keep X number of days, X number of weeks, X number of months and X number of years the backup. I love how Nakivo kept simple idea also simple to configure. There are vendors who claim to support GFS retention effortlessly, but when you want to implement it, you discover that they opted for a very difficult implementation. Click on the Next button to proceed to the next screen.

In the last step, you can name the job, set up App-aware mode, Change tracking, enable Network acceleration and set up encryption. In addition, you can also set up Pre and Post Actions like send job reports to email recipients, run scripts before and after the job is run. You can select a transporter, limit transporter load and enable Bandwidth throttling. Once you complete configuration, you can click on a Finish or Finish & Run button.

When the job is created and started, you will see job information on the Dashboard. On the Dashboard, you will see a percentage of the running job, virtual machines that are being backed up. You will also see the speed off in the MB/s for the backup job and transferred data in GB.

How to restore a VM to the Nutanix via Nakivo Backup & Replication

To restore a VM to the Nutanix platform, a procedure is as simple as the backup. Click on the Recover and select VM recovery from backup.

Select VM that you wish to recover. Here you can also select a recovery point.

On the Destination tab, you can select Cluster, storage container and Network you wish to recover to.

On the options tab, you can name the job, enable Network acceleration and encryption. You can also choose a recovery mode and new recovery name. You can also generate a new MAC address so that the VM won’t conflict with the existing VM.  You can complete a recovery job by clicking on the Finish or Finish & Run to start the job immediately.

Once the job is complete, you will see a new VM with a new name.

Nakivo was launched with exclusive VMware support. In fact, VMware was the only supported hypervisor for a while. Fast forward to the present and Nakivo supports Hyper-V and Amazon AWS in addition to VMware. If some features were missing from initial Hyper-V support, you should know, like my friend Boris, that Hyper-V support is now on the same level as VMware. Backup is important because if something goes wrong with your infrastructure, backup is the second line of defense. You can be back and running in no time or you could be doomed if the backup cant be used to restore the data.

Problem with backup is that when you configure all the settings it’s easy to think that it will work 100% all the time. Especially after the initial test, if data was restored for the first time, surely it can be restored whenever we need it. But unfortunately, in the IT field, everyone knows about Murphy’s law. Epigram that is typically stated as: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. One way to ensure that backup can be restored when we need to is to test the backup. That way we can be sure about data recoverability.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, especially with IT teams that small in number, backup is rarely tested. One way to solve the time problem is to automate tasks that can be automated. One such task is backup verification.

Hyper-V backup verification with Nakivo

Nakivo has one great feature which can help IT Administrators with backup verification on the Hyper-V platform. It is called Screenshot verification. The technology behind Screenshot verification works like this:

  • Backup is started
  • After the successful backup, VM is started in a secure container
  • After a while, a screenshot of the VM is created and sent to the Backup administrator

If VM had issues and cannot boot, for example, you can easily see that on the screenshot. Then you can quickly act and resolve the problem before the next backup window.

In order to configure Screenshot verification when creating a backup job follow the procedure below.

On the VMs tab, select servers you would like to backup. Click the Next button.

On the Destination tab, select Backup repository. Click button Next.

On the Schedule tab, set up a schedule for the backup job. You can run the job on demand like a test job for example or you can set up a more complex schedule. You can set up multiple backup schedules for the job if required. When you set your schedule, click on the button Next to proceed to the next tab.

On the Retention tab, you can set up retention for the job. You can keep the custom number of last recovery points. You can also set up a more classical GFS (Grandfather, Father, Son)rotation type approach to the rotation, where you also keep one recovery point per day, one recovery point per week, one recovery point per month and one recovery point per year. Click Next to proceed to the next tab.

On the Options tab, you can set several options. We are interested in the Screenshot verification option. When you enable that option, you can select a container where the VM will boot, number of VM that will be verified simultaneously, Recovery time objective in minutes and Screenshot delay in seconds. When you have configured all the options, click on Finish & Run to start the backup.

Once the backup is completed, Nakivo will start its magic. It will boot the server and create a screenshot. In the backup confirmation email, you will receive the screenshot of the server. Sometimes you have to adjust the settings a little bit. For example, if your server takes a long time to boot, you may receive a screenshot with the boot screen, while you are interested in the login screen.

When you would like to adjust delay settings, just change the Screenshot delay value and screenshot you receive in the email will have the correct information.

Use Nakivo Global Search to find unprotected VMs


I am often amazed at features a product provides but are somehow not used as often as they could be. Nakivo, for example, is a great backup and is very easy to use. You don’t need expensive training like with some other vendors. As soon as you start using it, you feel right at home. Maybe because everything is so familiar, you can miss part of a user interface screaming for attention. Search for example is one of the powerful features in Nakivo that is available for an enhanced experience and for better protection of your infrastructure.

You see, if you only need to protect a couple of virtual machines, you will probably set up Nakivo once and forget about it until you have to do a restore job or add a new virtual machine to the backup job. But as soon your environment contains dozens of virtual machines, protection becomes a challenge. Often you have to find a VM or check if certain VMs are protected. Let’s take a look at Global Search which was created to help you simplify your work.

How to access Global Search and how does it work?

On the top right corner is an Icon which you can click to access Global Search.

The Global Search interface has some nice features. As soon as you start typing, it will start showing items that have those words in the name. Because interaction is live, you don’t have to wait or have to click on a search button in order for the items to be shown. Global Search is also “smart” as it will show all elements of the backup infrastructure, including Backups, Replicas, Jobs & Groups, Protected Items, Unprotected Items, Backup Repositories, and Transportes. It will also separate them so that you always see where the shown items belong.

You can click on an item and see additional Actions. You will see If the item already belongs to the backup job and it’s full name, but if the item is unprotected, you can create a new job for this item, you can select a backup job or replication job. As an alternative, you can add this item to the existing job.

You can use global search also for finding existing jobs, for example, to do a restore. In that case, when you click on a backup job, you will see an option to perform a restore of VM, individual items, Flash VM boot or a proper recovery. You can also delete the job.

On the bottom left side, you can select which items you would like to be shown. For example, you may be interested in Replicas only, and by hiding remaining types you can prevent showing unnecessary items. Global Search is very handy when you need to find items that are not protected. You may have created new virtual machines and have not assigned them to the backup job. Let’s say that we need to find unprotected Oracle servers. Since we are interested in backups and Unprotected items, we will select only two items to be shown: Backups – because we are interested in the protection and Unprotected Items because we would like to see servers that have not been added to the backup job yet.

As soon as we start typing OR (for the word Oracle) unprotected items will be shown which include OR in the name.

Now that the unprotected items are shown, we can protect them directly from the Global Search. To do that, we can select the required items and click on the Bulk Action… button. We can create a new backup job, create a new replication job or we can add selected items existing job.

Symbols

When you have dozens of VMs, there is a better part of Global Search you can utilize to make your searches faster. You can use a question mark-? and asterisk – * signs. can be used instead of any single character. For example, if you have windows servers with names 2003 and 2008 you can use ? to list them. When you enter the following: Windows200you would get the following result:

  • AD_Windows2003
  • DC_Windows2008
  • OR_Windows2008R2

On the other hand, an asterisk * can be used to replace any character. You can use it for one or more characters. For example, I would like to see all servers with the name win or windows in name, when I use w plus * sign Global Search would list all entries with W and additional characters. That way if the win is anywhere in the name, the entry will be shown.

Benefits of using Global Search

By using Global Search you can save a lot of time. No more going through the backup infrastructure manually. Now you can find items quickly by typing a search phrase in the search box. By using a simple naming convention for your server, you can find a group of servers, unprotected servers and even servers which you need to use for a restore.

  • Finding unprotected servers
  • Finding VM backups
  • Finding Backup Jobs and Replicas

Policy-Based Data Protection

I can’t imagine IT without virtualization. In these days, almost all the servers are virtual and the ones that are not will soon become. The more servers we have, the more servers we have to manage and backup. Backing up a dozen servers is completely different than backing up hundreds of servers. In order to maintain a high quality of data protection, administrators have to keep up with all the changes that are taking place in IT. Management is making quick decisions, more data is required for better decisions and new virtual servers are being created. There must be a better way to protect existing and newly created servers.

Nakivo Backup & Replication 8.1 tackled this problem and made the job much easier for System Administrators. A solution comparable to auto-pilot that is used on Airplanes. The newly developed Policy-Based Data Protection feature will make manual data protection management go away by automating backup, replication, and backup copy jobs.

With 9 parameters currently available, you can create an automated job that will backup servers based on your conditions.
