How to backup Nutanix with Nakivo Backup and Replication

Nutanix is a mature hypervisor platform. It has wide adoption and it is quickly gaining market share. Nutanix, when it started with its vision for the next-gen hypervisor, has attracted many bright people from VMware who moved to Nutanix to execute its vision. Now, several years later, you can see the result, 14.000+ worldwide customers and that is only a beginning.

With Nutanix, you can effortlessly leverage cloud agility with ease of use, which included security and control. It is very easy to migrate from ESXi, Hyper-V and even public AWS to AHV with Nutanix Move, for free. While Nutanix has many benefits over similar solutions, you also have to make sure that you use the right solution for the backup. Nakivo Backup & Replication has added support for Nutanix. If for example you used Hyper-V and moved to Nutanix, you can still use Nakivo with Nutanix.

Backup Nutanix With Nakivo Backup and Replication

In order to backup Nutanix, we have to add Nutanix AVH cluster first. Click on Add New… button in the middle of the screen and click on Nutanix AVH cluster.

We have to enter the hostname or IP of the Nutanix cluster, Username, and Password. Unless you changed the cluster port, you can leave the default entry. For backing up Nutanix, we need to deploy Nutanix transporter. If Nutanix transporter is not yet deployed, you can do so before you add a Transporter to Nakivo Backup & Replication.

If credentials are correct, the Nutanix Cluster will be added.

In Nakivo Backup & Replication configuration, click on Transporters and Add Transporter.

Nutanix Transporter is a Nutanix AVH Appliance, which you can download from Nakivo website. Go to the Nakivo Backup and Replication download page where you can also download the trial. Click on a Nutanix AVH Virtual Appliance and click on a Transporter only. Deploy Transporter to the Nutanux AVH.

Enter the Transporter name, select Cluster, Storage container, and virtual network. In the Network section, you can configure a static address or DHCP address for IP and DNS configuration. Once you configure all the settings, click on a Deploy button.

If all the settings are correct, you will see the newly deployed Nutanix Transporter in the Transporters section.

Once we add Nutanix cluster and Nutanix transporter to the Nakivo Backup & Replication, we can create our first backup job. To create a new Nutanix AVH backup job, click on a Create -> Nutanix AVH backup job.

You will start a New Backup Job Wizzard for Nutanix AVH. Select virtual machines you would like to backup and click on the Next button.

Select onboard Backup Repository, select VM disks and Backup repository. Click on the Next button.

On the Schedule tab, you can create a schedule for the job, you can select days on which the job will run and the hour at which it will run. You can also click on the Do not schedule, run on demand if you want the job to be run on a per needed basis. Click on the Next button.

On the Retention tab, you can set up retention for the job. You can choose to keep the select number of copies or you can configure Grandfather, father, son type of retention where you will also keep X number of days, X number of weeks, X number of months and X number of years the backup. I love how Nakivo kept simple idea also simple to configure. There are vendors who claim to support GFS retention effortlessly, but when you want to implement it, you discover that they opted for a very difficult implementation. Click on the Next button to proceed to the next screen.

In the last step, you can name the job, set up App-aware mode, Change tracking, enable Network acceleration and set up encryption. In addition, you can also set up Pre and Post Actions like send job reports to email recipients, run scripts before and after the job is run. You can select a transporter, limit transporter load and enable Bandwidth throttling. Once you complete configuration, you can click on a Finish or Finish & Run button.

When the job is created and started, you will see job information on the Dashboard. On the Dashboard, you will see a percentage of the running job, virtual machines that are being backed up. You will also see the speed off in the MB/s for the backup job and transferred data in GB.

How to restore a VM to the Nutanix via Nakivo Backup & Replication

To restore a VM to the Nutanix platform, a procedure is as simple as the backup. Click on the Recover and select VM recovery from backup.

Select VM that you wish to recover. Here you can also select a recovery point.

On the Destination tab, you can select Cluster, storage container and Network you wish to recover to.

On the options tab, you can name the job, enable Network acceleration and encryption. You can also choose a recovery mode and new recovery name. You can also generate a new MAC address so that the VM won’t conflict with the existing VM.  You can complete a recovery job by clicking on the Finish or Finish & Run to start the job immediately.

Once the job is complete, you will see a new VM with a new name.

Conclusion

Nutanix is quickly gaining tractions in the industry. Hyperconverged infrastructure is here and Nutanix is perfect for the job. Companies like Volkswagen, JetBlue, Leonardo, Trek, and Johannesburg Stock Exchange are proof that Nutanix does something right. When you use a great hypervisor it is only natural to use a great backup solution as well. Nakivo Backup & Replication is a perfect match for backing up your data, either locally in the cloud or both.

Class action to target government over ‘robotdebt’ scheme

Centrelink’s controversial ‘robodebt’ scheme will be the subject of a class action led by law firm Gordon Legal with the support of the Labor Party.

The scheme — formally known as the Online Compliance Initiative (OCI) — involves automatically generated letters being sent to former and current welfare recipients demanding that they prove they were not overpaid by Centrelink.

The data-matching program takes Australian Taxation Office (ATO) income records and matches them with Centrelink clients. Centrelink’s algorithm assumes that the ATO-reported annual income of an individual was earned at an equal rate throughout the year, leading to letters being sent asking highlighting a possible debt being owed to Centrelink even in cases where there is no conflict between the data sets.

A 2017 report from a Senate inquiry called for the system’s suspension.

“Throughout this inquiry, the committee heard many personal accounts of the stress and distress the automated debt recovery system has caused recipients,” the report stated. The OCI system involved a “fundamental lack of procedural fairness” that was “evident in every stage,” the report said.

Victoria uploads data for national facial recognition system

Victoria will begin uploading driver’s licence photographs to the federal government National Driver Licence Facial Recognition Solution (NDLFRS).

The NDLFRS is operated by the federal Department of Home Affairs.

The Victorian government’s announcement today marks a significant step towards the full launch of a national Australian facial recognition system, although for now use of the images will be restricted to state agencies.

VicRoads and Victoria Police will use the system to unearth duplicate IDs and fraud, the state government said.

The government said agencies in other states and territories and federal entities will be unable to access the Victorian images until it is satisfied with federal enabling legislation for the system, which will facilitate a number of facial identification and facial verification services.

The relevant legislation is currently being examined by the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS).

The Commonwealth bill outlines five identity-matching services, including face verification, face identification, the One Person One Licence Service (to identify individuals that hold multiple licences), a utility service to assess the accuracy and quality of facial data holdings, and a service for securely sharing biometric identity information between government agencies.

Although Victoria is a party to the October 2017 Council of Australian Governments agreement to establish the new system, the state government has indicated some qualms with the proposed federal legislation.

“This technology will help keep government agencies ahead of the pack when it comes to combating identity fraud, which is one of the most common and costly crimes facing our state,” Gavin Jennings, Victoria’s special minister of state, said in a statement released today.

“We are doing this as part of a national agreement, while ensuring the privacy of Victorians is not compromised.”

“This will make it harder for people to conceal their true identities and use multiple licences to avoid traffic fines, demerit points or licence cancellations,” said Victoria’s roads minister Jaala Pulford.

“This will greatly assist in removing unauthorised and dangerous drivers from our roads.”

Telstra launches outbound voice calling on Google Nest devices, iPhone eSIM support

Telstra says it is the first mobile carrier in the world to support voice-activated outbound calls on Google Nest and Home devices.

The telco said that its mobile customers could link up to six mobile services to a compatible Google Assistant device and synchronise contacts. A Google Mini, Home, Home Max or Hub can be used to dial by contact or business name, or call a particular number.

Google Assistant can be trained to recognise up to six individuals’ voices using its Voice Match feature.

Telstra will begin to roll out the service to customers from today.

“Voice technology is growing rapidly in Australia with smart speakers in over 1.35M Australian households, and two-thirds of Australian owners admitting to using their smart speaker daily,” said Telstra connected devices and accessories principal, Steve Dance.

NBN cuts entry-level broadband prices, nixes differential pricing for video

NBN Co has detailed a price cut for entry-level broadband services that could make it more economical for retail service providers (RSPs) to offer ADSL-equivalent plans.

The company said it planned to shave at least $16.80 off the additional monthly charge levied on entry-level services once an extremely low usage threshold is passed.

NBN Co in June launched an industry consultation on its wholesale broadband pricing, with the company indicating it wanted to encourage the take-up of higher speed services as well as make NBN services more attractive to low-income households.

The company today revealed it had launched a second round of consultation, with NBN Co indicating it would move to quickly cut the wholesale pricing of low-end broadband services.

The company has a complex pricing structure for its entry-level 12Mbps services. A basic service with 150Kbps of included capacity has an effective wholesale price of $22.50. That can be used to serve households that are only interested in voice services or that have very low data needs.

Oracle to launch Melbourne cloud region

Oracle will launch a Melbourne region for its cloud services as part of its push to add 20 new regions to its portfolio by the end of next year.

The company aims to end 2020 with a total of 36 Oracle Cloud infrastructure regions. Currently the company operates 16 Oracle Cloud regions (five of those are dedicated to government).

Oracle last month launched a new Generation 2 Cloud region in Sydney.

The company used its Oracle Openworld conference in San Francisco to detail its in-country dual region strategy, offering customers on-shore options for disaster recovery.

“Enterprise customers worldwide require geographically distributed regions for true business continuity, disaster protection and regional compliance requirements. Multiple availability domains within a region will not address this issue,” said Don Johnson, executive vice president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

NAB adds Google to mix as it continues its multi-cloud push

National Australia Bank’s multi-cloud strategy has expanded to encompass Google, NAB announced today.

The bank said that Google Cloud would join Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) in its portfolio of public cloud providers as it looks to migrate some 35 per cent of its applications to the cloud by the end of next year.

NAB’s chief technology and operations officer, Patrick Wright, cited Google’s strengths in data analytics, machine learning and container management as particular drawcards.

“Our customers are asking us to better understand their needs and to meet those expectations far more efficiently than we’ve been able to previously,” Wright said in a statement.

“Investment in data is a critical element of our digital transformation – to be able to use data to develop products and services to improve customer experiences and be able to anticipate their needs.”

In April 2018 the bank announced the launch of NAB Cloud Guild as it sought to build up its in-house cloud expertise. The program initially had a focus on AWS, with the bank using Amazon’s services for its initial foray into using public cloud to store and process its data.

In October 2018, NAB revealed details of its collaboration with Microsoft, including shifting key platforms such as SAP to Azure.

Later in 2018, the bank announced that although it was firmly in the multi-cloud camp, AWS had been selected as its “long term strategic cloud provider”. NAB said in November it believed some its core banking systems would be shifted to AWS by the end of 2019.

The bank revealed earlier this year that in the six months ended 31 March it moved 128 applications on to cloud services, with 198 of its applications now running on cloud infrastructure. NAB has also moved to aggressively shut down legacy applications.

The bank said today that it now had 400 applications in the cloud, with its overall number of applications reduced by 8 per cent.

Wright said today in an interview released by NAB that competitive tension was one of the appealing aspects of the multi-cloud approach. The NAB CTOO said that multi-cloud enabled the bank to shift workloads across platforms and integrate a range of tools and capabilities.

“We’re designing our most critical applications to be portable between cloud partners to avoid concentration risk which is an important regulatory and risk consideration,” Wright said in a statement.

“We also want to tap into the advanced capabilities of the world’s best cloud providers to improve customer experience,” the NAB tech executive said.

“Google’s history of embracing open source technology enhances our ability to orchestrate infrastructure effectively across multi-cloud environments, and their software-based platform, Anthos, is a unique solution that we’ll explore further over time.”

NAB has added GCP training modules to its NAB Cloud and Analytics Guild education program. It said it will also move to integrate GCP capabilities into the NAB Discovery Cloud and Data Hub.

NSW iVote integrity ‘at risk’ over jobs axe

The integrity of future NSW elections could be under threat after the state’s Electoral Commission lost a number of “very specialised skills” amid a spending axe.

The Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt admitted he had to let a number of people go in the cabinet’s iVote arm after funding for them was discontinued, which posed a “challenge” for the beleaguered department.

Schmidt’s admission comes just six months after iVote system went down on the eve of NSW’s elections.

Revealed during a State Premier and Finance committee on 5 September, Schmidt highlighted the “core capability” reduction and its effect on the” risk of failure [and] a risk of something going wrong”.

“The worst outcome… is that the outcome of the election is called into question and we have to do it again and the integrity of the Electoral Commissioner or the commission is called into doubt as well,” he said.

Set up to ensure people who have a disability, are sick or are outside of the state on election day can vote, the iVote registration system failed to load in the recent election’s run-up, causing unprecedented pressure on the service’s phone line, as reported in Computerworld.

A week earlier, the platform came under scrutiny after security flaws were found in the voting system in Switzerland, which developed by Scytl, the same creator of NSW’s iVote.

Schmidt addressed these “user experience problems” as down to “normal IT technical problems — nothing malicious from overseas”.

“Having said that, we have to be alive to the fact that it is a potential risk,” he added.

However, Member of the Legislative Council Robert Borsak raised concerns about any potential roll-out of iVote to general elections due to international hacking incidents, especially in the US and in China.

“In light of recent overseas hacking events — and we have seen a lot of that; it has chewed up a lot of news time in the United States, especially supposed Russian hacking of the presidential election for Trump a few years ago and also some activities of the Chinese we are told, from time to time — all these reports have certainly got to give you some pause in relation to the technologies they are using,” Borsak said. “And the iVote technology is quite old now, as far as I understand it.”

Although Schmidt claimed the system was refreshed before the last election, he also expressed reservations about its wider use.

“I am committed to iVote,” he said. “I am not arguing for an expansion of iVote. iVote serves a purpose for a particular tranche of electors. iVote was originally introduced for blind, low-vision or disabled electors.”

“I believe it serves a valuable function for people who might otherwise be disenfranchised,” he added.

Facebook says ACCC recommendations would make targeted advertising ‘practically unworkable’

Facebook has endorsed a range of measures to strengthen Australian privacy law but rejected some of the recommendations from the Digital Platforms Inquiry of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Facebook says that some ACCC’s recommendations would “make targeted advertising practically unworkable in Australia” and put Australia “out of step with other countries such as Singapore and the European Union.”

In a response to a government consultation on the ACCC’s recommendations in the final report of the inquiry, the social networking giant called for Australian alignment with the European Union’s GDPR privacy regime. The company said some ACCC recommendations would deliver a much more expansive definition of personal information than that outlined in the EU privacy rules.

Among the ACCC’s recommendations were a range of changes to the Privacy Act, including updates that clarify the term “personal information” captures “technical data such as IP addresses, device identifiers, location data, and any other online identifiers that may be used identify an individual”.

“This would be at odds with the GDPR,” Facebook argued, which treats such data as personal information “only where it is used, or combined with other data, to identify an individual”.

Optus keen to access government’s face-matching service

Optus has endorsed the creation of a national biometrics system that will offer services based on a range of facial images held by federal, state and territory bodies.

The government earlier this year resurrected two bills that lapsed when parliament was dissolved in preparation for the federal election.

The bills will create a new system (dubbed ‘The Capability’) with a hub and spoke architecture that will facilitate access to a range of separately maintained databases containing facial images, such as state and territory driver’s licence databases. A range of services will be delivered through the system, including facial verification and facial identification services.

The government has indicated it is keen to have the enabling federal legislation passed before the end of 2019. Eventual private sector access to some services has long been on the government’s radar.

While the Facial Identification Service (FIS) will be restricted to law enforcement, anti-corruption and intelligence agencies, the Face Verification Service (FVS), the first phase of which launched in 2016, will potentially be used by non-government organisations.
